Save Money and Water in Your Home

The average person uses 80 - 100 gallons of water each day! Only a fraction of that is used for drinking water, and the rest is used in the kitchen, the bathroom and the laundry room. Here are some water saving tips you can use to reduce water use in your home.

Bathroom:

  • Check your toilet for leaks. A drop of food coloring in the tank that appears in the bowl may indicate a leak. Leaky toilets can waste hundreds of gallons a day!
  • Take shorter showers. Switch to a high efficiency shower head.
  • Install an aerator in your sink faucet. Fix any faucet leaks. Turn off the faucet when brushing teeth or shaving.

Kitchen:

  • Only run full loads in the dishwasher.
  • Buy and install a faucet aerator.
  • Do not buy or install garbage disposals. Compost food wastes instead.
  • Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator to avoid running the tap for cold water.
  • When washing dishes by hand, use both sides of the sink: one to wash, one to rinse – and avoid washing dishes under running water.

Laundry:

  • Only wash full loads of laundry. The average washing machine uses 43 gallons of water per load.
  • Use the minimum setting needed for cleaning your clothes.
  • Consider investing in a high efficiency, front loading washing machine.
