FLUORIDATION OF THE DISTRICT WATER SUPPLY:
Water received from the regional source water supply contains
levels of chlorine and fluoride. In October 2003 the Board of Commissioners decided
that the fluoride in the regional supply would not be removed before water from the
regional system (a surface water supply) was blended with the District's groundwater
supply. After the District connected to the regional water supply, most of the
District's customers now receive blended water including both groundwater and regional
water, which contains fluoride. State law provides that when public water supply is
fluoridated, the water purveyor must maintain a fluoride concentration in the range
between .8 and 1.3 parts per million [WAC 246-290-460]. The District has the authority
under RCW 57.08.012 to fluoridate the District's water supply. Therefore, on December
15, 2003, the Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution authorizing the fluoridation
of the District's Water Supply [Resolution No. 3121].

SUMMARY OF PROJECTS
District Water Comprehensive Plan:
The Sammamish Plateau Water & Sewer District adopted
a Water Comprehensive Plan in May 2001 that considered many supply alternatives,
and identified four sources of supply combinations that could be further
evaluated for meeting the District’s projected demands. Following
further evaluation, an Amendment to the Water Comprehensive Plan was completed
in 2002 that identified the District’s course of action to include:
- Use of the existing groundwater supply.
- Supplement with supply from the regional water system.
- Identified the Cascade Water Alliance as the most likely
supplier of regional water to the District.
- Segregation of a portion of the service area to groundwater
supply only.
- Install chlorine disinfection in the entire system
regardless of the source water, to protect customer health.
District Decisions:
On October 13, 2003, the Board of Commissioners elected
not to remove fluoride from the regional water supply prior to its introduction
to the District’s water distribution system.
See excerpt
from the meeting minutes.
Most Recent Public Hearing:
The District held a public open house on December 10, 2003 to hear public
comment on the topics of the Connection to the Regional Pipeline, Chlorination
and Fluoridation of the District’s water supply.
