EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS

ATTENTION TEACHERS AND PARENTS! SCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAMS AVAILABLE!

Are you looking for a way to make a splash in your class? The Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District offers free interactive education programs for elementary, middle and high school students within our service area. Programs cover a number of water-related topics, and include the following:

  • A water cycle quiz game to test student knowledge of the water cycle
  • Terrarium construction to show the water cycle in action
  • An Enviroscape Watershed Model which shows the effects of surface water pollution
  • A groundwater model which shows the effects of groundwater contamination
  • A native plant identification game to teach native plant identification and their importance in area landscapes
  • A presentation on the relationship between people and salmon
  • Maps, informative booklets, pamphlets and videos on water use and water conservation
  • Programs can be customized to fit your classroom needs

The District has formed a partnership with Puget Sound Energy and offers the Powerful Choices for the Environment program for sixth to eighth grade students in schools throughout the District's service area. This four-day program teaches students about natural resources and how the use of water, electricity and recycling can impact the environment. The goal is to help students make informed choices about their resource use. This program is currently offered at Pine Lake and Beaver Lake Middle Schools in the Issaquah School District, and Inglewood Junior High School in the Lake Washington School District.

The District also participates in the Sammamish Watershed Festival, which is held in May of each year. The Festival is a celebration of Northwest culture and environmental education. Students from throughout the Sammamish Watershed gather for one day in an outdoor setting and learn about water conservation, water quality, salmon, recycling, hazardous waste, and native plants.

District staff members can provide maps, brochures and other resources to students, and are willing to work with students on special individual learning projects related to water or wastewater. If the District currently serves your school and you would like a classroom or outdoor presentation, or you would like further information about our programs, please contact Janet Sailer, Conservation and Public Information Specialist at (425) 392-6256, extension 204, or email her at janet@sammplat.wa.org.
